Runners' Health
Running is a great way of keeping fit and is becoming more and more popular. It is an inexpensive and easily accessible activity that everyone can participate in from the casual jogger to high level competition. At whatever level, however, injuries can and will occur and physiotherapy can not only treat your injuries and symptoms but can pinpoint the underlying cause of the problem and even prevent potential injuries from occurring. The most common reason for running injuries is the overuse of the musculoskeletal structures as a result of biomechamical faults, poor muscle control, inadequate footwear and poor training methods. Typical running injuries can include;
- Foot and heel pain such as plantarfaciitis Stress fractures Tendonopathies ‘shin splints’ Achilles and calf pain Knee pain Iliotibial band friction syndrome
- Low back pain
All of these conditions are treatable with physiotherapy, the challenge for the clinician, however, is to discover the underlying cause of the injury to prevent the return of the problem. At Physio for All we are able to use the latest video analysis technology to assess your running technique, lower limb mechanics and muscle control. This will enable us to give you a specific exercise programme to correct any muscle imbalance and improve your core stability, which will not only help resolve your symptoms but go on to enhance your performance as an athlete. We are also in constant communication with our podiatrists (specialists in the mechanics of the foot and ankle), and will often refer you to see them if further help is required with footwear or orthotics. Physio for All’s links with orthopaedic consultants also mean that we can quickly refer you for further assessment such as X-rays or MRI scans, ensuring an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
It is essential with any running injury to receive treatment as soon as possible, but even if you are symptom free or are new to running we can help develop exercise programmes and advise on training and footwear.
Physio for All now also offers video gait analysis and podiatry which can help to resolve many runners problems.
