Cranial Therapy

What is Craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy is a manual therapy which treats the whole body to regain a healthy state and therefore development. It is non-invasive, safe, gentle and extremely effective in many cases. It works on many different levels and influences many different structures within the body. It influences the musculo-skeletal system, the nervous system, the immune system, the organs, the connective tissues, the fluids and the energy systems of the body.

How does it work?

Craniosacral therapy does not involve any manipulation. Light contact or touch is usually taken up at the cranium or sacrum but contact can be made on any part of the body deemed appropriate. Through this touch, the craniosacral therapist can pick up subtle patterns of motion within the body, and allowing the motion to occur and resistance and asymetries to dissipate, can relieve minor to sever aches and pains.

The body's tissues contract in response to physical or emotional stress and strains. As a result, a cumulative effect may occur which can restrict the body's functioning and may give rise to problems over the years. Craniosacral therapists can feel these restrictions and using their hands, allow the body to free its restrictive patterns. When these tensions held in the body are released, the energy used to hold the bosy in these restrictive patterns is unleashed which may help boost energy levels within the body.

How does the therapist work?

The therapist checks the joints, the muscles, the ligaments and the organs and then treats according to according to her findings. Treatment is all by hand and is very gentle. No medicine, injections or machines are used.

It will involve massage, mobilisations or muscular stretching.

Who can benefit from craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral therapy is suitable for every age from newborn babies to the elderly and has been proven especially beneficial in certain conditions.

  • Babies - birth trauma, colic, pyloric stenosis, feeding difficulties
  • Hyperactivity, behavioural problems
  • Chronic conditions - chronic fatigue syndrome, RSI
  • Digestive disorders
  • Ante/Post-natal
  • Meningitis
  • Pain- headaches, migraines, menstrual cramps, neck and back pain
  • Stress

Why use Craniosacral therapy for babies?

It is the best therapy for babies following birth. The baby may have had a poor posture in its Mother’s womb during pregnancy; the delivery may have been difficult (too long, too fast, with forceps..) The baby may have presented asymmetrically, or with its spine to the mother’s spine. This could all result in things such as a smaller eye, a stuck ear, abnormal shapes of the head or body asymmetry- banana shape.

Why Craniosacral Therapy for mothers ?

It helps to balance the pelvis and the spine of the Mother after delivery.

Is the treatment painful for the baby ?

The therapist must not hurt the child with the treatment but some techniques require ‘firmness’ which can be slightly uncomfortable for the baby who is not used to it.

Why does the baby cry?

Occasionally the baby cries as he is not used to feeling hands on his head and may therefore feel apprehensive. He can be easily reassured by the parent staying close and giving him love and attention.

If the child is old enough it can be explained how it will help him feel better, eat better and sleep better.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually 4-6 sessions is sufficient depending on the condition. In some cases it is beneficial to have regular check ups.
